Destiny: The Taken King Sets A New Record On PlayStation

Sep 17, 2015

Activision announced today that The Taken King, Bungie’s sprawling expansion to last year’s sci-fi shooter Destiny, has become the most downloaded video game in PlayStation history—at least on day-one.

“Destiny: The Taken King is officially the most downloaded game on day-one in PlayStation history and set a new benchmark for both total Destiny players and peak online concurrency on day-one, so it’s safe to say the Destiny franchise continues to gain momentum,” said Eric Hirshberg, CEO of Activision Publishing. “Along with our talented partners at Bungie, we cannot wait to watch the community continue to grow and tackle the King’s Fall Raid kicking off on Friday.”

Unfortunately, what this means precisely is impossible to say. The video game publisher has not released hard numbers. That’s not necessarily a bad sign, but it’s puzzling. It’s also something Activision has done a lot of lately, especially with regards to the blockbuster Call of Duty series, which is annually touted as a best seller without any numbers behind that claim. Which isn’t to say it’s untrue—it’s just, more than likely, a sign that the numbers are not spectacular enough to share. Call of Duty has been declining annually for several years now, and Activision would prefer “best seller” to be the story rather than “sold worse than last year’s release.”
